Seven tales of cosmic horror completed by August Derleth from notes and story outlines left by H. P. Lovecraft at his death, including the title story 'The Survivor', 'The Peabody Heritage', 'The Gable Window' and 'The Lamp of Alhazred'. The stories return to Lovecraft's familiar territory of Arkham and the Cthulhu mythos, and the last piece offers a thinly veiled portrait of Lovecraft himself. Of interest to readers of weird fiction and collectors of the Lovecraft–Derleth 'posthumous collaborations' and vintage Ballantine horror paperbacks.

The book has obvious wear, with creasing, rubbing and edge wear to the cover and spine, chipping at the spine ends, and a cluster of small puncture marks with creasing at the lower front corner that has left indentations on the first page; the pages and page edges are tanned with age and there are some foxing spots inside.
