Welcome to Mrs Lofthouse’s Emporium !! We are a bookshop based in Scarborough UK.

We buy and sell a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books and accesories. Our store aims to be accesible for all readers and stock a wide range of popular genres.

You can bring books in to our shop to sell or exchange. Or you can contact us and we can organise to buy a collection if you don’t live near Scarborough.

Donating

Drop off

Donations help keep our shop running and we really appreciate any donation. You don’t need to call or send photos, just pop by and drop them off at the door!! We can accept any books as donations no quibble.

Collection

Unfortunately we can’t currently collect donations from your house without sending photos first. Please send us a photo and mention that you want to donate, we will look into collection, it is very rare that we can collect though due to cost and time restrictions of moving 1000s of books!! (Plus our shop is getting pretty full) 

Cash first then donate second? 

( As our storeroom fills quickly, we don’t accept donations that we first refuse for cash) So we can buy books for cash but ask any extra books are taken to nearby charities if we have first declined to buy for cash.  Please see below and visit more of the website to establish what we are looking to buy.

_{How to exchange books for store credit –}

1. Bring your books to the shop
2. We will appraise them (we may reject a lot please don’t be offended- We reject on saleablitiy not quality of the writing!!! )
3. We issue you a store credit note which can be exhanged in our shop for other books.

( We don’t exchange most Romance style books and we may reject a percentage of Crime thrillers / general fiction. )

(We can exchange or buy 99% of., manga, sprayed edges., graphic novels, rare art books, horror, Roleplaying games and Warhammer

How to sell

1. Drop off – You can drop off books at the shop and we will assess them (it might take a small amount of time 1-2 hours to asses them if a larger quantity.  ) We offer 50% higher rate fopr trade than cash
2.  Contact us first before drop off.  – Please use the form or send us an email directly if you have too many books and want to check if we are interested in the books. 
3.  Live out of Scarborough and District?  You can post and we can arrange a courier if we are interested. 

PLEASE NOTE – WE ARE NOT INTERESTED IN BUYING OR TRADING ALL BOOKS – There are many books we will struggle to sell unfortunately!!! Please don’t be offended if we turn down your books, it’s really down to space in the shop and other factors.

LARGE COLLECTIONS

If you wish us to view the books in your house we will need photos of the books (not each book, just a few photos of the shelves or boxes with the books ) – This is easier for you and bettter for us than lists. Please email us or use the upload form.

PLEASE NOTE

We do not do housecalls without photos. Please email us or give us a call us regarding large collections of books.

Book Purchasing Terms & Conditions

1. Condition of Books & Offer Validity All offers made for your books are strictly dependent on the items being received in good condition. For rare or collectable books, items must be in excellent condition and perfectly match the descriptions and photographs provided to us prior to the offer.

2. Accurate Representation & Undisclosed Flaws We strive to evaluate and price all books fairly. However, any omissions regarding a book’s condition (e.g., hidden damage, missing pages, staining) that were not disclosed to us prior to our offer will result in a reassessment. In these instances:

• We reserve the right to reduce our initial offer or refuse the books entirely due to misrepresentation.
• If a new, reduced offer is made and you choose not to accept it, you (the seller) will be strictly liable for all return postage costs.

3. Postage, Shipping, & Liability Liability during transit depends on who has arranged and paid for the shipping:

• Seller-Paid Postage: If you are arranging and paying for the postage, we take zero responsibility for any loss or damage incurred while the books are in the care of your chosen courier.
• Company-Paid Postage: In instances where we have agreed to cover the postage costs, we will accept responsibility for loss or damage only if the packaging requirements detailed below are strictly followed.

4. Packaging Requirements & Photographic Proof To protect the books during transit and ensure our liability coverage applies (when we pay for postage), the following packaging standards are mandatory:

• Exterior: The box must be securely sealed with strong packing tape across all three dimensions (all seams and edges).
• Interior: Plentiful padding (e.g., bubble wrap, packing peanuts, crumpled paper) must be used inside the box to completely prevent the books from shifting or getting damaged in transit.
• Photographic Proof: You must take clear photographs of the packaging inside (showing the padding around the books) and outside (showing the fully taped box) before shipping.

Important: If you fail to provide photographic proof of adequate packaging, and the books arrive damaged due to poor packing, all responsibility falls to the seller. In such cases, we reserve the right to heavily reduce or completely withdraw our offer.

5. Agreement of Terms By offering, sending, or selling books to us, you are explicitly acknowledging and agreeing to these terms, as well as all overall Terms and Conditions outlined on this website.
