Recycling Policy
At our bookshop, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and promoting sustainability. We do this by:
- Recycling a large amount of second hand books that we receive from our customers and suppliers. We either resell them at a discounted price or donate them to local schools and libraries.
- Recycling some cardboard packaging that we use for shipping and storing our books. We also reuse boxes and envelopes whenever possible.
- Recylcling bags for life from our customers who sell or donate books to us. These bags are made of recycled materials and can be used multiple times.
- Donating money to environmental charities every month. We support various causes that aim to protect the planet and its biodiversity.
Do you run ( or know of) a charity /school / institution that needs books?
Please get in touch, we have a large number of books that we are able to donate and you can request genres of books that we will be able to supply for free. We always have popoular thrillers, general fiction and crime novels along with more general non fiction books which we can provide to charities or groups in need. Get in touch.
Our History.
The shop was started in the early 1980s by Sean Lofthouse. The family had other bookshops in Robin Hoods Bay and Whitby. It may have initially been called Cuveen’s Books. Sean lived in France where he unfortunately passed away in his middle age. Traditionally the bookshop was a pile em high bookshop 🙂 A romantic bookshop piled high with books which was a browsers heaven. But if you wanted less than an hour or 2 to go though piles of often obscure books it would have been a bit difficult. 🙂 We have tried to recreate some of this wonder in the new shop with aisles bursting with books but we also like some order for the modern reader in the age of the internet.

Management and ownership of the bookshop was taken over by Micheal Heaton around 2010. He brought more order to the shop , and was keen on selling thrillers and romance books with the shop bursting with books. He was working late into his 80s when lockdown hit.
Daniel Spink ( the current owner) bought the shop in late 2020 and has expanded the range of books so the shop now sells both new and 2nd hand books. The shop was moved next door by him in 2023 to allow more space and a slightly drier enviroment (still a couple of leaks) Daniel tried to keep the romance of the old shop and history while also bringing better accesibilty, lighting and a more specialsed range of books. Whilst still having plenty of cheap great thrillers and cheap fiction books for the many books a week readers 🙂 Also a good trade in service and a chance to sell your used books for a fair price.
